I work as an investigative reporter for Gannett Wisconsin Media, serving 10 local papers. I came to Wisconsin in 2010 to work as a local government reporter for the Wausau Daily Herald in Central Wisconsin, focusing on six communities surrounding Wausau.
During the year before heading out into the real world, I earned a masters degree in public affairs reporting at the University of Illinois at Springfield and worked as a state government intern for the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
In addition to my professional experience at the Post Dispatch, I worked as a news intern for the Janesville Gazette in Wisconsin and as a freelance contributor to the Southtown Star in Chicago’s southern suburbs. That work allowed me to put reporting, writing and multimedia skills I developed as an undergraduate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an editor at its independent student newspaper The Daily Illini to use.
Still reading? Fantastic.
I’m a Chicago native, growing up within walking distance of Midway Airport and a 30-minute Orange Line ride into downtown. Eventually, I want to work my way back to my hometown. But I’m still of the mindset that you have to learn how to be part of a community before you can properly cover the news happening there.
I’m always interested in learning new ways to be an effective reporter. Feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or on twitter @katiefoody.
