Though I held numerous positions at The Daily Illini, the independent student newspaper at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, I continued to report and write for the nearly four years I spent there.

Between the end of spring and summer publications, an 18-year-old man took refuge in the parking garage of an apartment building on the University of Illinois’ campus. Only several months removed from the shootings at Northern Illinois University, students wondered why they were not notified via emergency text or e-mail.
